Shawbury residents are encouraged to have their say on the future of Shawbury Library

Related topics: Community / Leisure, culture and heritage

Since February 2015 Shropshire Council has been discussing future management options for Shawbury Library with local residents and organisations.

As no alternative management arrangements have been identified for the library, Shropshire Council is now seeking responses to proposals to close the library, and to meet the library needs of residents in the Shawbury area using a combination of delivery methods.

The consultation runs until Friday 24 June 2016, and sets out in more detail the services offered by a mobile library  It also provides an opportunity for residents and local organisations to suggest ideas for new management arrangements for the library.

Residents and local organisations can discuss their ideas with officers from Shropshire Council at an open afternoon on Wednesday 25 May 2016, 4pm-6pm at Shawbury Library.

Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:

“Due to the financial challenges faced by the council, without an alternative management arrangement for Shawbury we are now consulting on closure. Libraries are an integral part of our community and we remain hopeful that a new provider will come forward to run the library.”

Simon Jones, local Shropshire Councillor for Shawbury, added:

“This is possibly the last chance for new management arrangements to be identified for the library.  I urge anyone with ideas on how the library can be managed in the future to let us know.”

Consultation documents are available from Shawbury Library, Shawbury Village Hall and Shawbury Post Office.  Alternatively, comments can be submitted online by going to shropshire.gov.uk/get-involved and searching for Shawbury Library.

Deadline for submissions is 24 June 2016.
