Residents and organisations across Shropshire are being urged to celebrate the Queen’s ninetieth birthday by helping to tidy up where they live.

Shropshire Council is supporting the “Clean for The Queen” – a national campaign to get a million people out and about cleaning up their communities. It’s organised by Keep Britain Tidy, with the support of all the UK’s litter charities.

The council is arranging and supporting a number of litter picks across the county from 4 March 2016 to 9 March 2016 and is encouraging people to take part, and help to improve their local area. In each case, Shropshire Council is providing the litter-picking equipment and will be collecting all the waste cleared for disposal.

Litter picks will be taking place on the following days:

  • Friday 4 March: 12-2pm. Litter pick in Ludlow town centre organised by Costa Coffee.
  • Friday 4 March – Crowmoor Primary School and Nursery, Crowmere Road, Shrewsbury have organised a “Clean Crowmoor” litter picking event.
  • Saturday 5 March: Stanton Lacy Women’s Institute is organising a litterpick in the village and surrounding roads.
  • Saturday 5 March from 9am to 11am. The Girl Guides – Ellesmere District will be taking part in the “90 people doing 90 minutes for the Queen’s 90th Birthday” litter picking event, meeting at Ellesmere Town Hall.
  • Wednesday 9 March: Richard’s Castle Women’s Institute is organising a litter pick in the village and surrounding roads.

Litter picks are also being held on the weekend of 5/6 March in Myddle, Baschurch, Knockin, Maesbury. Ash and Quatt.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transportation, said:

“Clean for The Queen aims to give the country a tidy-up ahead of The Queen’s 90th birthday in April. By taking part in Clean for The Queen, individuals and communities will not only be giving The Queen a suitably impressive gift to mark her 90th birthday, they will also be giving themselves and their area a present – a clean space in which to live, work and play.”
