Shropshire Council invites licensed energy suppliers to submit partnership proposals

Related topics: Community

Shropshire Council is inviting energy supply companies interested in forming a partnership with the council to submit proposals to supply energy to households and businesses.

They are also invited to submit plans to identify and deliver commercial energy opportunities that would generate revenue for Shropshire Council.

In autumn 2015 Shropshire Council’s Cabinet agreed to seek to form a partnership with an energy supply company, to help generate additional income for the council and help to deliver a range of other benefits, including stimulating economic development, and addressing fuel poverty and environmental issues.

Now the council is inviting licensed energy suppliers to submit their partnership proposals.

The intention is to select, if possible, an organisation with whom the council can partner to supply energy and delivery commercial opportunities.

However the council may opt to partner with more than one organisation to deliver the energy supply to customers, and other organisations to deliver commercial energy propositions to generate new income streams for Shropshire Council.

Shropshire Council will only consider submissions from licensed energy suppliers, however it is anticipated that the delivery of innovative solutions could be delivered through the suppliers’ existing supply chain or with new partners.

It is envisaged that the partnership to deliver energy supply will be for an initial period of five years with an option to extend annually thereafter.

Peter Nutting, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member for income generation and efficiency savings, said:

“Shropshire Council is exploring the opportunity to partner with an energy supply company to provide competitively-priced energy to residents. The aim is to provide Shropshire people and communities with low-cost energy over the long term.

“Our aim is to be reliably low-cost – so people don’t have to keep switching to get a good deal – invest profit back to benefit our communities, and provide great, honest service that can be trusted.

“As a result of this invitation, Shropshire Council intends to enter into a commercial arrangement to jointly work with a licensed energy partner in order to achieve the council’s aims.

“This partnership would help to generate income for the council, but also deliver a range of other important benefits for the council, and for the people of Shropshire.”

Interested suppliers can request a proposal document and a response document by sending an email to joe.bubb@shropshire.gov.uk
