University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) and Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin have cemented their partnership to enhance sporting and research opportunities for students, staff and the community.

Energize, the county sports partnership, has been supporting the development of UCS for more than 12 months and the team is based at Guildhall, the Higher Education Institution’s learning and research base.

An agreement has now been signed which further strengthens the ways the organisations work together.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement outlines a joint commitment to:

Encouraging and supporting students and staff to adopt an active, healthy lifestyle and contribute to community life in the region, for example through joining sports clubs, organisations and volunteering;Developing and delivering short courses and conferences for students, staff and the community;

Developing learning experiences, placements and internships to improve employment prospects;

Exploring opportunities for staff and postgraduate students to undertake research work for and with Energize.

Professor Anna Sutton, Provost of University Centre Shrewsbury, said:

“Working alongside Energize, we’re ensuring that our students and staff enjoy a welcoming, varied sporting environment and a high level of support to participate at the level they want. Together we have developed links with local sports clubs and National Governing Bodies, which continue to grow, and we are promoting healthy and active lifestyles within the University Centre and the wider community.

“With this agreement, our partnership goes from strength-to-strength, and I’m looking forward to the further development of sport and research opportunities with the Energize team.”

Chris Child, Energize Chief Executive, added:

“The connection and partnership with University Centre Shrewsbury is entirely natural for us.

“Energize is a not-for-profit charitable company which exists to support local communities, organisations and individuals to be more physically active, through sport, recreation and the adoption of healthy lifestyles. Working with the University Centre will bring new expertise, opportunities and connections to further fulfil this aim.

“We hope to encourage students and staff to be active too and to demonstrate that a healthy body is also key to having a healthy mind.”

Energize works with organisations within and beyond Shropshire to help people “get their hearts beating faster”. For more information go to http://energizestw.org.uk.
