Recycle your real Christmas tree and help Caring for God’s Acre

Veolia, the waste contractor for Shropshire Council, is urging residents to recycle their real Christmas trees.

For every Christmas tree that is recycled, Veolia will be making a generous donation to the charity Caring for God’s Acre.

Last year over 3,500 real trees were recycled by Shropshire residents both at the kerbside, or at one of the five household recycling centres in Shropshire (Shrewsbury, Oswestry,  Craven Arms, Whitchurch and Bridgnorth).

As part of the garden waste collection, trees can be left by the side of your garden waste bin; trees over 5ft tall should be cut into small pieces.

Following on from 2015’s success, where Veolia donated £5,000 to Shropshire Wildlife Trust, this year Veolia have decided to run the scheme again, but have chosen a different charity to donate the money to.

Speaking about the scheme, Angela James, Communications Officer for Veolia, said:

“As a way of thanking residents for recycling their real Christmas tree, Veolia will be making a donation to Caring for God’s Acre, a charity dedicated to the conservation of churchyards and cemeteries across the UK. Shropshire residents can put their real Christmas tree out to be recycled over the next few weeks with their garden waste collection at the kerbside, or they can take it to their local Household Recycling Centre.”

Shropshire currently recycles just over 50% of its waste, which is well above the national average. Trees taken for recycling by Veolia will be sent for processing to be used as compost. It is hoped that in 2016, even more residents will recycle their waste.
