Proposal for traffic signals to help control HGVs on A4169 Sheinton Street in Much Wenlock

Related topics: Community

Shropshire Council has been made aware, over a number of years, of incidents that occur with HGVs on A4169 Sheinton Street in Much Wenlock, where the carriageway is particularly narrow.

Through the council’s Road Safety Policy, funding has been found to investigate if there is a workable solution to remove the incidences of two large vehicles, travelling in opposite directions, meeting at the narrow section of the road and causing road safety issues, damage to footways and kerbs, concern to pedestrians, and congestion.

The proposal that is being put forward is to install traffic signals that will detect when two large vehicles are approaching the pinch point from opposite directions, and will hold one line of traffic to enable the one large vehicle to pass through.

A plan will be on display in Priory Hall, Much Wenlock on Friday 15 January 2016 for residents to view the proposal and put any comments forward. Both Shropshire Council’s principal engineer Alice Dilly and a representative from the council’s consultants, Mouchel, will be available between 12.30pm and 7.30pm to answer any questions or talk through the proposal.

The plans will then be on display in Much Wenlock Library during opening hours from Tuesday 19 January until Thursday 28 January 2016.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, said:-

“We’re keen to invite residents to come and look at this proposal, and to hear views from the public about the issue, and on the measure we’re proposing to take to address it. I hope that locals will share their thoughts and a positive result will ensue.”

David Turner, local Shropshire Councillor for Much Wenlock, said:

“This longstanding problem is the cause of concern to many local residents, both to drivers and those pedestrians using the narrow pavement. I’m pleased that this local safety priority has now reached the point where we can consult on the proposed solution.”
