Press release from Shropshire Council’s Conservative group

The Conservative group on Shropshire Council have this evening (Monday 7 December 2015) unanimously voted for Councillor Malcolm Pate to be nominated as the new Shropshire Council Leader.

The position will be ratified at the next Full Council meeting on Thursday 17 December 2015. Councillor Pate will be giving up his present role as Chairman of the Council, a position he has held since the formation of the unitary authority.

Councillor Pate said there were difficult times ahead, but his previous experience as Leader of the former Shropshire County Council would be a tremendous help in dealing with those problems. He said he hoped to make the council more transparent, consensual and open.

He praised his Deputy Leader (Councillor Steve Charmley) for holding the fort until a new Leader was appointed, and said he looked forward to working with him in taking the council forward.
