Historic photographs of Shrewsbury are now online

As many of the residents of the county know Shropshire is rich in heritage and, thanks to the hard work by staff and volunteers at Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives, thousands of historic photographs of Shrewsbury and other areas of Shropshire are now available online for all to see.

It took a number of years for staff to complete, but now over 30,000 photographs are available online at www.shropshirearchives.org.uk, offering a fascinating glimpse into the county’s past, and bringing to life the houses, streets, and countryside as well as the people of Shropshire.

The photographs have been catalogued by volunteers whilst being supported by the staff at the archives. To date, all Shropshire places beginning with A to L have been completed, plus a very large collection of Shrewsbury photographs. The Shrewsbury photographs show how the buildings and streets of the county town have changed, or not, over more than a century. The photographs for remaining places in Shropshire from M to Y will be going online in the next few months.

Councillor Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for visitor economy, said: “We are so grateful for the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who have given their time to this project. It is great to see these resources available for everyone to see and use for research.”

Work on the photograph collection was also supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery fund from 2011 to earlier this year. High resolution copies of the images can be purchased from Shropshire Archives.
