Arts and culture will be in the picture at a University Centre Shrewsbury Societies Evening this month.

Representatives from arts and culture societies are invited to the event at Rowley’s House on Tuesday 30 June 2015, to discuss opportunities for students and staff at University Centre Shrewsbury to get involved in and contribute to local activities.

Any members of societies or other organisations who would be keen to welcome new student members, discuss how student and staff volunteers could support their group and any new opportunities that could be created by working together, are urged to come along from 6.30pm to 8pm.

The event will also offer time to talk about how, as the curriculum grows, groups could be part of academic activities, either though offering work placements or guest lecturing.

Jess Grocutt, Shrewsbury Students Union Co-ordinator, said:

“We want to contribute to Shropshire life and to support students in as many ways as we can to be part of their community.

“So wherever possible we’re looking to provide opportunities for students and staff to join in with existing clubs, societies and other organisations in the town – whether in the fields of arts, culture or sport – and in turn, these groups have the chance to benefit from new members bringing their skills and ideas.

“Good links have already been made with sports organisations across the county. The Societies Evening is being held to build on this and help our students to add to the incredibly vibrant and diverse arts and culture scene in Shropshire.

“Whether you run an orchestra or a history group, if you are keen to welcome new members, develop links with us, and work together to promote art and culture, we’d love to see you at the event.”

The Societies Evening is taking place with support from The Hive, an independent registered charity based in Shrewsbury town centre, working across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and the sub-region to inspire young people through the arts.

University Centre Shrewsbury is being established by the University of Chester and Shropshire Council. The first undergraduate students will be welcomed to the University Centre in late September 2015.

Rowley’s House, the venue for the Societies Evening, is one of the most well-known historical buildings in Shrewsbury, and the administrative centre for University Centre Shrewsbury. The Barker Street building (SY1 1QH) also provides an information point and seminar rooms.

Anyone who would like to come along to the event is asked to contact Jess Grocutt, Students Union Co-ordinator, University Centre Shrewsbury.

Light refreshments will be available during the evening.
