Postgraduate courses in a range of areas are offered at University Centre Shrewsbury

Graduates have the chance to add to their qualifications without meeting the cost of tuition fees thanks to a support scheme available at University Centre Shrewsbury.

People completing undergraduate courses this year can move on to study a full-time Master’s programme at the University Centre in September 2015 with help from the Chester Postgraduate Support Scheme – a bursary award package worth up to £10,000 towards fees.

Master’s courses available at University Centre Shrewsbury include History of Science, Museums Practice and Sports and Exercise Medicine.

University Centre Shrewsbury students are eligible to apply as the institution has been established by the University of Chester, in partnership with Shropshire Council.

As tuition fees differ between courses, the value of the individual elements of each bursary will depend on the chosen course. Any surplus funds would be primarily for successful applicants to undertake the Postgraduate Skills Package and then receive a cash bursary. The Postgraduate Skills Package is a personal and professional development programme offering students the opportunity to further enhance their skills.

All students applying for the bursary must have entered undergraduate study after September 2012 and have been charged the higher tuition fees of £6,000 to £9,000.

The focus is on awarding support to applicants who are in receipt of a means tested maintenance grant for their undergraduate studies. Priority will also be given to students from a Low Participation Neighbourhood or in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance. Students who have caring responsibilities or are care leavers will also be given precedence.

Paul Kirkbright, University Centre Shrewsbury Deputy Provost, said:

“We are offering fantastic Master’s courses in a range of areas, all of which are designed to enhance students’ skills in their chosen field, shaping them into highly employable Master’s level graduates.

“The Postgraduate Support Scheme – an outstanding bursary award package worth £10,000 – can help applicants to afford this. The non-repayable bursary not only helps to cover tuition fees, but if there’s money remaining, can help financially during the years studies, and enable students to benefit from the Postgraduate Skills Package.

“If you’ve enjoyed your time at university, and want to study at a postgraduate level, this is a great opportunity to study a Master’s degree without the costs.”

The bursary scheme is only in operation for 2015-16 and will be replaced by a new postgraduate loans system next year.

The scheme is open for applications now until 1 June 1 2015, in the second round of the scheme. The exact detail of individual elements of the bursary will be confirmed in bursary offer letters.
