Civic Trust Awards honour the redevelopment of Shrewsbury’s Music Hall
The quality of the transformation of Shrewsbury’s Music Hall and 13th century Vaughan’s Mansion into the new Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery has been recognised with an award.
At the 2015 Civic Trust Awards ceremony the project won a Commendation Award, which was presented in the form of a plaque to Shropshire Council.
The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in 1959 to recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects that demonstrate high-quality architecture or design, have demonstrated sustainability, are accessible to all users and have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community.
Today (Friday 27 March 2015) the council was pleased to welcome Martin Roe, partner at the project’s architects Austin-Smith:Lord to unveil the plaque on the ground floor of the Museum & Art Gallery.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for business growth and culture, said:
“On behalf of the council can I say how delighted we are to be recognised with a Commendation in the latest Civic Trust Awards. The quality of the restoration of these historic buildings has been exceptional and visitors have been coming to the new Museum & Art Gallery in their thousands since it opened almost a year ago. The response to the permanent galleries and the superb temporary exhibitions has been exceptional. This week alone we have four exhibitions for visitors to enjoy including the magnificent Secret Egypt which continues through the Easter holidays until 26 April.”

“It is impossible to overstate the enormity of the council’s achievement on this project, not only providing first class cultural facilities for Shropshire but in securing the future of such an important group of buildings of national importance.”
