Safer Internet Day – Tuesday 10 February 2015
Shropshire Council’s public protection team is helping to spread the message of Safer Internet Day 2015, which will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 10 February 2015 with the slogan “Let’s create a better Internet together”.
Co-ordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology amongst children and teenagers.
Young people use the Internet for information, shopping and to keep in touch with friends and family, and therefore it is vital that they stay safe online on any device, including smartphones.
The public protection team encourages everyone to visit the “Get Safe Online” website for top tips, real life stories and an interactive online help guide, Cyber Street, to find out how to identify fraud and learn how to avoid it.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for public protection, said:
“We can all help to empower children and young people to embrace the positive by equipping them with the digital literacy skills they require for today’s world, and giving them opportunities to use and create positive content online. We can also help to respond to the negative by supporting young people if they encounter problems online, and by giving them the resilience, confidence and skills that young people need to navigate the internet safely.”
