Councillor Martin Bennett is to resign as a Shropshire Councillor and Oswestry Town Councillor after deciding to move to Warwick to live with and care for his sick mother, whose health has recently worsened.

Councillor Bennett has represented the Oswestry East division on Shropshire Council since June 2009. He has served on Oswestry Town Council since 1983 and been Mayor of Oswestry on three occasions.

Keith Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Council, said:

“I would like to thank Martin for all his work during his time as a Shropshire Councillor, but I fully understand  the reasons for his resignation and wish him, and his mother, well for the future.”

Town Mayor, Councillor John Gareth Jones, said:

“Martin will be a significant loss to the council and the town. I extend my thanks to him for the many years of loyal service that he has given and wish him well for the future.”
