Shropshire residents encouraged to get vaccinated against seasonal flu
For many people the flu will not be a full-blown health crisis, but it will be a burden on daily life. The flu often leaves individuals bedridden and unwell for around a week.
However, for the older population, people with long-term health conditions, and pregnant women, a bout of the flu can be much more serious and can lead to health complications such as pneumonia or bronchitis.
Peggy Mullock, local Shropshire Councillor for Whitchurch North, explained why she always gets her vaccination:
“I always get my flu jab, as I am not only the age where flu can cause serious complications, I am also Diabetic, so feel that this is a wise precaution.
“I know from having flu in the past it can be extremely debilitating and it can take weeks to feel well again. As we get older, illnesses – especially chest infections – are harder to clear. I ensure that I get the jab every year as the viruses that cause flu change each year, so it’s important to have a vaccine that matches the current circulating strains of the flu virus.
“I would encourage everyone entitled to the flu jab to have it. It only takes a second to have the jab, but could save you from days or weeks of illness during the winter. The jab doesn’t give someone flu, as the vaccine does not contain a live virus.”
Who can get the free flu vaccination?
Individuals in ‘at risk’ groups are eligible for a free flu vaccination through their GP. Those ‘at risk’ include:
- Anyone aged over 65
- Children and adults with a long-term health condition, such as heart conditions, chest conditions (such as asthma), diabetes, kidney disease, weakened immune system or MS
- Pregnant women.
This year, the flu vaccination is also being offered to all healthy children aged 2 to 4 years old. Some secondary schools in Shropshire are participating in a flu vaccine pilot for children in Years 7 and 8. Carers and healthcare workers may be eligible for the vaccination through their employer.
