Discover Secret Egypt at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery

A new exhibition coming to Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery next year (24 January to 26 April 2015) will invite visitors to re-examine their perceptions of ancient Egypt and challenge some of the enduring myths that surround this fascinating and mysterious civilisation.

A collection of thought-provoking archeological evidence will be on display, as well as highlights including artistic interpretations of the famous pharaohs and a simulation of a tomb chapel and burial chamber.

Among the 150 objects in the exhibition are ceramics, jewellery, statues, coffins and animal and human mummies. These have been curated to address popular modern misconceptions, examining the science behind the mummification process and evidence of curses in ancient Egyptian society, and dispelling science fiction explanations that link the building of the pyramids to extraterrestrial life.

Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member for visitor economy, said:

“The realm of ancient Egypt is something that continues to capture our imaginations, but often what we think we know has been distorted by the films, books and TV programmes that make it their inspiration.  The exhibition is a chance to discover for yourself what is fact and what is fantasy.  It’s a highly interactive show, rich in graphic images, films and hands-on learning activities.”

The new Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery opened in April 2014 as the result of a major restoration project on the town’s old Music Hall.  Secret Egypt will be on show in the Special Exhibitions Gallery and is a touring exhibition from the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, in partnership with Birmingham Museums Trust.  It has been supported by Arts Council England.

Secret Egypt runs from 24 January to 26 April 2015.  Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery is open 10am – 4.30pm (closed Mondays).  Admission is £4 per adult and £2 per child, which includes entry to the Special Exhibitions Gallery.  Concessions are available.
