A new contemporary art gallery that represents established and emerging artists from across the British Isles is to open within the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery complex on Sunday 26 October 2014.

The Joseph Gibson Gallery will be located on the ground floor of the Museum, opposite the Visitor Information Centre, after owner Joseph Gibson signed a contract with Shropshire Council.

The Gallery is committed to showing exciting and innovative works of art, including contemporary paintings and works on paper.

It will have a continual programme of exhibitions featuring the work of gallery artists as well as themed shows and solo events.

Gallery owner, Joseph Gibson, said:

“We are delighted to be establishing a contemporary art gallery in the town and fortunate to have secured the ideal location within the renovated Music Hall complex.  The cultural environment provided by the excellent Museum & Art Gallery, together with the relaxed ambience of the stop. Café Bar, create the perfect context for showing works of art.

“Our vision is to bring high-quality and innovative exhibitions into the gallery space with a programme that will change on a monthly basis.   The opportunity for the gallery to become a valued amenity for the public, as well as a commercial success, is something that makes the venture doubly attractive.   We are looking forward to the opening with great anticipation.”

Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member with responsibility for Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, said:

“I’m delighted that the Joseph Gibson Gallery will soon be opening within the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery complex and I wish Joseph every success with his new venture.  It’s very fitting that a new art gallery is to open within the Museum & Art Gallery and it really will add to, and greatly enhance, what we offer to visitors.  I’m really looking forward to the Gallery opening later this month.”

Owned and managed by Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery opened its doors to the public on 1 April 2014 after a ground-breaking restoration project that saw two buildings – Shrewsbury’s Victorian Music Hall and the 13th century Vaughan’s Mansion – renovated and restored to create a vast new museum and spectacular gallery space, together with function rooms.

Shrewsbury visitor information centre and the stop. Café Bar are also housed in the Museum complex.
