News from our partners Wheelchair Football Association

If you have a disability and have a passion for football then come on down to a Telford festival where you will experience the game of powerchair football.

Organised by the Wheelchair Football Association (WFA), participants will get the opportunity to have a go and understand how the game is played.  They will also get the chance to speak to, and practice with, established players from surrounding clubs.

The festival will take place at the National Sports and Conference Centre, near Newport, Shropshire, TF10 9AT on Sunday 15 June 2014 from 10am to 4pm.  The day will consist of various powerchair football skills, small-sided games, and an exhibition game featuring local clubs to demonstrate this exciting team sport.

Powerchair football is a fast, dynamic and growing sport that is designed and caters for people with a wide range of physical disabilities.  Due to the sport’s unique nature, it allows people from the ages of five to take part, with both male and female participants being able to take part at the same time.

The festival is free and all specialist equipment and coaching will be provided on the day. Participants will be able to speak to other players, clubs and the WFA regional development officer who will be running the event, throughout the day.  Spaces are limited so if you do not want to miss out then please sign up today.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WFATelfordFestival

Telford has an established, well-run Powerchair football club, and they are actively seeking new players in and around the Telford area.  There are also other clubs in the West Midlands and East Midlands who always welcome new players to the game.

If you would like to find out more about the sport or register to attend the festival please contact Anthony Nweke, Midlands Powerchair Football Development Officer at anthony.nweke@thewfa.org.uk.

Sam Bull, National Development Manager for the WFA, said:

“This is a great opportunity for new people to come and find out about our fantastic sport.  Once they see it, try it and start playing I am sure they will love it.  With two local clubs who have teams that compete up to the highest level, there is no reason why these new players won’t become stars of the future.”

About the WFA

The Wheelchair Football Association (WFA) was formed in 2005 to govern the sport of powerchair football in England.  The WFA are recognised by the Football Association as the sport’s governing body, and we work closely with them and the ‘football network’ to develop more clubs and playing opportunities across England.

The WFA run their own coach education and referee training courses to upskill and recruit new volunteers into our sport.  The WFA is run by an executive committee, who all work on a voluntary basis.  These members are a mixture of sports professionals, players, club representatives and partner organisations.

The WFA is funded through a variety of funding streams and projects.  A large percentage of the costs for competitions and events are funded by the clubs and the players themselves.  The WFA is constantly trying to source funding or sponsorship in order to enable us to continue the development of powerchair football.   The WFA were a founder member of Federation International of Powerchair Football Associations (FIPFA – www.fipfa.org), and the WFA is considered to be one of the major contributors to the development of the world game.
