Major roadworks finish in Wem
A major scheme to replace gas pipes in the centre of Wem has been completed, meaning an end to traffic disruption caused by the work.
Wales and West Utilities have been undertaking the essential work, which has meant some town centre roads have had to be closed.
The utility company has worked with the local community to minimise the disruption during the project by funding the provision for free car parking in the main Aston Street car park.
With the project being completed on Thursday 8 May 2014, the free parking has now ended, so car parking charges will be back to normal from Friday 9 May 2014.
Councillor Claire Wild, Shropshire Council Cabinet member for transport and highways, said:
“We appreciate these were essential works, and the council has done its best to minimise disruption by working closely with Wales and West Utilities throughout the project.”
Chris Mellings, Shropshire Councillor for Wem, said:
“We have worked closely with Wales and West to minimise the impact of their works in our town over the past few months.
“Though it has taken longer than thought, they have done a good job and it has been a bonus having free car parking.
“While we have stressed during this time that Wem has still been very much open for business we know some businesses have suffered, and I hope Wales and West will look favourably on any compensation claims to help hard pressed businesses through this time.
“We hope people will continue to support the great range of businesses and services in our town. I will be encouraging Shropshire Council to consider the impact of free car parking and whether it can introduce some free parking periods to support local trade, services and events.”
