Special event to highlight personalised adult support services

Related topics: Community / Health

An event is being organised to help people who use adult social care in Shropshire learn more about how personalised support can work for them.

It will take place at Shropshire Council’s HQ, Shirehall, in Shrewsbury on Friday 4 April 2014 between 10am and 2pm, and is open to anyone who uses adult services, their family and friends, or anyone who has an interest in adult social care.

There will be information stalls from all sorts of organisations and charities who provide support.

People who come along to the event will be able to share their experiences of using adult social care in a “Big Brother”-style video diary room, with all comments being used to help improve the way adult services are provided in the future.

There will also be information about the opportunities available for people to volunteer with various organisations which provide support for adults across Shropshire.

And there will be the opportunity to learn about other services and options that are available in local communities – and more importantly, how to access them.

Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult services – transformation and safeguarding, said:

“Adult social care is changing to be more about what each individual person needs, and how the right type of support can enhance independence, rather than making people rely on a particular service or place.

“However, we appreciate that any change can be worrying, and we have to accept that making major budget reductions is not something we would choose to do.

“It’s important that we all understand and learn from what we have done so far to be able to build on what’s working well for people.  I know the move to personalised support packages has not been easy for everyone, so events like this can help us share the difficulties too, which will help us improve things in the future.

“I would urge as many people as possible to come along – both those who receive support, and those who are interested in what options are available.  We hope the event will be valuable for a wide range of people and we look forward to seeing lots of people on the day.”
