People2People’s second winter ball
A date has been set for the second People2People winter ball, after the huge success of the event last year.
People2People, a pilot social work scheme, will host the ball at Shrewsbury Town FC’s stadium Greenhous Meadow, in Oteley Road, on Saturday 16 November 2013.
As part of the scheme, new groups led by volunteers have been created to give older people, adults with a learning or physical disability, and carers, opportunities to share experiences and advice with others in similar situations to themselves. The money raised from the ball will be used to further increase the support these peer support groups are able to offer.
Shropshire Council is one of just six councils across England which received funding from the Government to pilot the social work practice. People2People looks at different ways of providing social work support to ensure it best suits people’s needs, and helps them to be more active and independent. The pilot has been extended to March 2014, and is likely to continue beyond this date.
The scheme was initially set up in central Shrewsbury and has expanded into south Shropshire under a not-for-profit community interest company. The board of directors includes people who use the service, staff, non-executive directors and representatives from Shropshire Council.
The ball features a three-course dinner, music, entertainment, and a raffle featuring many amazing prizes donated by local businesses.
Tickets cost £30. Doors open at 7.30pm. The bar is open until 12.30am, with the evening drawing to a close at 1am.
Ros Adams, social work practice lead, said:
“As well as offering a great night out, the funds raised will help to build on the opportunities being explored by People2People to help people maintain their independence and remain in their communities for longer, by giving them more control over their support.”
Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult services – transformation and safeguarding, said:
“Last year’s event was a great success, raising more than £2,000 for the peer support groups, and we hope to match its success this year.
“We would urge people to come along and join in with the festivities; and if anyone would be able to donate goods or a service to the raffle we would be really grateful – please get in touch.”
