Young families encouraged to ‘get outdoors’ in Whitchurch this summer

A range of fun activities will be on offer for families with children under five in and around Whitchurch on Wednesday 7 August 2013 at Whitchurch Children’s Centre, Station Road. 

The free “Let’s Go Outdoors” event starts from 10am – 2pm and is being organised by Shropshire Council’s Sure Start Children’s Centre Services.

There will be a host of activities to take part in including music and movement, messy play, outdoor games and stories and rhymes.  Bob the Shropshire Play Bus will also be at the event.  You can bring a picnic with you.  Older siblings are also welcome to attend with their families.

Sure Start children’s centre services aims to promote services to families with children under five in the local area.  The service supports children’s learning and development and encourages healthy lifestyles.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children’s services – transformation and safeguarding, said:

“Our Sure Start children’s centre services provide many opportunities for families with children under five to take part in free fun activities to support healthy lifestyles. 

“The Let’s Go Outdoors event is a great way to get young ones out and about.  Play is an essential part of child’s learning and development, as well as being enjoyable for parents and carers.  I would encourage families to come along, take part and have some fun.”

Peggy Mullock, a local Shropshire Councillor for Whitchurch North, added:

“This is going to be a great day out in the town for young children and their parents.  Come along and have fun with the fantastic Sure Start team at our infants school.  Lots of activities and advice, so pack your picnic and come along to join in the fun.”

Parents will also be able to access information and advice from local children’s centre support workers about Sure Start children’s centre membership, and what other groups and services are available in their local area. 

The event will also be promoting the NHS Change for Life programme.

Sure Start children’s services also run a weekly Stay and Play group at their Whitchurch Children’s Centre on Wednesdays from 1pm – 3pm.  Sessions run all year round and are free of charge.
