Residents and visitors encouraged to support Shrewsbury’s first Marathon
Shropshire Council welcomes Shrewsbury’s first-ever full and half marathon event to the town on Sunday 23 June 2013 and encourages everyone to come along and give their support.
Residents and visitors will get to watch and support the approximate 2,500 participants and also enjoy the shops and other attractions the town has to offer.
The full marathon starts at 9am with the half marathon starting at 9.30am.
When visiting on marathon day, please be aware of the special travel and parking arrangements and plan your journey accordingly, particularly as there may be congestion on roads around the edges of the town centre.
All town centre roads, Longden Coleham, Longden Road and those in the Kingsland area will be closed from 7am and prior to this the traffic management company will be busy setting up the traffic control arrangements on the route.
The event finishes at around 4pm. Most town centre car parks will be unavailable during this time however, the following Shropshire Council car parks will be available:
- Frankwell and Abbey Foregate long stay car parks open as normal (any season ticket holders for St Julian’s car park may use Abbey Foregate).
- Raven Meadows multi-storey car park will be open between 10am and 5pm with controlled access being made from Smithfield Road and Castle Foregate direction only.
- In addition to these car parks, the Oxon park and ride will be available between 7.30am and 4pm with the drop off/pick up point being located at Frankwell island.
Councillor Claire Wild, Cabinet member for transport at Shropshire Council said;
“The Shrewsbury Marathon event is a fantastic opportunity to bring many residents and visitors to the town. This event really puts Shrewsbury on the map as well as promoting healthy and active lifestyles.
“I would like to say good luck to all participants and hope for good weather and an enjoyable day for all.”
There will be some local bus services in operation terminating at temporary stops near to the town centre.
Parking restrictions will be in place on the marathon route and any resident who normally park in these areas are asked to make alternative arrangements.
Vehicle access for residents in the town centre will be controlled by event stewards. Should access be required then please be aware there may be long delays, so please keep vehicle movements to an absolute minimum.
