Make a difference in your area – support a community litter pick

Related topics: Community

Shropshire Council is encouraging residents, local businesses and voluntary groups to make a difference in their area by getting involved in a community litter pick this summer.

The council’s environmental maintenance team has organised a series of litter picks focusing on each market town as part of the national Big Tidy Up campaign.

As well as their routine streetcleaning, the team will be looking to remove any flyposting and graffiti.

Council officers will meet any volunteers and to give a quick health and safety talk at the start of each event.  Litter picks are in conjunction with local voluntary groups and new recruits for ongoing events are most welcomed by the friendly groups. If the weather is bad, please telephone 0345 678 9006 to confirm the event is still going ahead.

The dates are:

  • Thursday 20 June, 10.30am – Church Stretton, meeting at Easthope Road car park by the supermarket.
  • Monday 24 June, 9.30am- Craven Arms, meeting at the sheep tracks sculpture.
  • Monday 15 July, 10.30am- Bishop’s Castle, meeting at the Kerry Lane entrance to the recreation ground.
  • Monday 16 September, 10.30am – Ludlow, meeting at Castle Street car park.

A date for Cleobury Mortimer will shortly be set for the summer.

Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for environmental maintenance, said:

“We hope people will come along and get involved in their community litter pick, even if you have only half an hour to spare.  This is a great opportunity to tidy towns for the tourist season, and the more people that get involved the bigger the impact will be.

“Our teams are committed to improving Shropshire’s environment and I am delighted that we are continuing to support the national Big Tidy Up campaign.”

If you would like to organise a community litter pick or report a problem with litter, graffiti or flyposting contact the environmental maintenance teams on 0345 678 9006 or report a problem online at www.shropshire.gov.uk/environmentmaintenance.nsf.
