Wem sports club in funding success
Wem Cricket Club were celebrating recently after learning that they had secured funding from Sport England.
With the help of Shropshire Council’s leisure services and the Shropshire Cricket Board, the club put forward a bid to Sport England Small Grants scheme to enhance facilities and promote the club to the community.
The funding will enable the club to purchase a portable cricket cover and devote resources to promoting the sport to people with disabilities.
Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and culture, said:
“This is fantastic news for Wem Cricket Club. The grant will help the club to get more members of the community into cricket and also enhance facilities for the existing members. In these times of austerity, financial support coming into the county to sustain or improve our community clubs is very beneficial. We are glad to have given Wem Cricket Club assistance in putting the bid together.”
Pauline Dee, a local Shropshire Councillor for Wem, said:
“I am very pleased that the cricket club has secured funding to help improve facilities at their ground, particularly as it will enable those with a disability to take part. I recently had a conducted tour of the clubhouse and was very impressed at what has been achieved by the club over the years for their members and the local community.”
Chris Mellings, also a local Shropshire Councillor for Wem, and a Vice President of the club, said:
“This is great news; it enables the club to continue improving its facilities and opportunities for people – especially local youngsters to play cricket in their local community. The club already has a great record for its commitment to young people and it’s fantastic to be able to build on this.”
