New mobile speed enforcement on A442 Kidderminster Road in Bridgnorth

A new mobile speed enforcement site is being launched by West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership on the A442 Kidderminster Road in Bridgnorth, following concerns raised by the community about the excessive speeds being driven by motorists along the road.

The new site forms part of the Safer Roads Partnership’s Community Concern programme which responds to community requests for speed enforcement.  Local residents raised their concerns through Shropshire Council, who brought it to the attention of the partnership and asked for action to be taken to address the situation and improve the safety of the 30mph road.

Anna Higgins, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said:

“The introduction of a mobile speed camera on the A442 Kidderminster Road supports speed enforcement work which has already started on Mill Street in Bridgnorth, and aims to reduce speeds and improve the safety of the road along the entire route.  The speed data we collected on Kidderminster Road highlighted a significant speed compliance problem; over half of all drivers are exceeding the speed limit and 15% of vehicles are travelling above 38.9mph.”

Alice Dilly, Shropshire Council’s principal engineer, said:

“We are very pleased that this location has been able to be taken forward as an enforcement site to complement the existing site on the A442 at Mill Street and influence traffic speeds on both of these gateways into the town, which have both been significant concerns for local residents.”

Speed data will be collected while the enforcement site is in place to assess the impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.  

West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership is part of West Mercia Police, and works in partnership with nine partner agencies to reduce casualties and make the roads safer for all users in West Mercia through targeted communication, education and training together with enforcement.
