Acclaimed Irish author to visit Shrewsbury Library
Shropshire Council is inviting people to visit Shrewsbury Library on Thursday 11 April 2013 to hear all about Peter Murphy’s latest novel “Shall We Gather at the River”.
The novel tells the story of Enoch O’Reilly, the great flood that afflicts his small town, and the rash of mysterious suicides that accompany it. Charlatan, Presleyite and local radiovangelist, O’Reilly is a man haunted by the childhood ghosts of his father’s sinister radio set … a false prophet destined for a terrible consummation with that old, evil river.
Peter’s 2009 debut, “John the Revelator”, received widespread acclaim in Ireland and was hailed as “an absolutely wonderful novel” by Colm Toibin.
The author works as a freelance journalist and has made several appearances as a regular guest on RTE’s art’s review show The Works.
The event, which runs between 1pm and 2pm, will be hosted in the library’s Hobbs Room. Tickets are still available at just £3.
Kate Woodward, Shropshire Council’s library manager, said:
“We’re very pleased to be hosting this event in our own riverside town of Shrewsbury and hope that people will come along to find out more about the book and it’s author and what the library has to offer. It’s a great way to spend a lunchbreak.”
Anyone interested in attending can contact Shrewsbury Library via phone on 01743 255308 or email at shrewsbury.library@shropshire.gov.uk.
