New rounders players wanted in Shrewsbury
Expressions of interest are being sought from rounders players to enter the new Shrewsbury Recreational Rounders league starting in May 2013.
The league has been set up to introduce more people to the sport of rounders. Shropshire Council’s leisure services team is hoping to attract female players that haven’t played rounders for a while, new players, and regular players that don’t currently play in a league.
League fixtures will take place at London Road Sport Centre on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Start-up sessions to go over the rules and tactics involved in the game will be held prior to the start of the league in May. Each team of players will need to provide someone who is prepared to do some umpiring, for whom free training and mentoring will be provided.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, said:
“The recreational rounders project is aimed at attracting new players into the sport, as well as re-engaging with people who haven’t played for a few years. This is the first time a central venue league has been run in Shrewsbury, and will give people the opportunity to play or get back into playing rounders.”
