Ludlow Town Walls update

Sections of Ludlow Town Walls have been fenced off while engineers continue to assess their safety.

People are being advised to stay away from the wall near The Linney, which has been declared as unsafe, and a small number of people living in properties that back on to the wall were advised on Friday (1 March 2013) to leave their homes as a precaution.

A small number of people who took up that advice have been offered alternative accommodation by the council while urgent discussions take place with the Diocese of Hereford.

As the responsible authority which owns the wall, the Diocese appointed a structural engineer on Monday (4 March 2013) who will now do the detailed design and survey work needed to establish how the wall can be stablised.

Any other residents who may live near Ludlow Town Walls and have not been contacted should not be concerned, as the council has informed everyone who is directly impacted.

Local councillors Rosanna and Martin Taylor-Smith, along with council leader Keith Barrow and council officers, visited people living in properties deemed to be at risk on Friday evening to advise them to leave if they could as a precautionary measure.

Councillor Rosanna Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council member for Ludlow North, said:

“We would like to thank the residents who we spoke to on Friday for their understanding in what were difficult circumstances.  Our main priority was to make sure everyone was safe, and we will now offer our help and expertise to the Diocese who are taking the lead to see what measures need to be put in place to repair this part of the wall.

“This particular section has now been fenced off for people’s safety, and it’s important that people don’t try to get beyond the fencing to look at the wall themselves.”

Council leader, Keith Barrow, added:

“I would like to thank everyone involved with the temporary evacuation of a small number of residents on Friday night, and everything ran as smoothly as it could have done in the circumstances.  We are staying in touch with the people involved to keep them updated and will offer them alternative accommodation as and when needed.”
