Haughmond Hill and NHS health checks on Loton and Tern LJC agenda

Related topics: Community / Democracy

The future management of Haughmond Hill near Shrewsbury will be discussed at the next meeting of the Loton and Tern Local Joint Committee (LJC) at Bicton Village Hall on Thursday 7 March 2013 starting at 7pm.

Georgina Sharp, the Forestry Commission Recreation Ranger for The Marches area, will be attending the meeting and talking about the Forestry Commission’s future plans for Haughmond Hill, including the recently-approved plans to introduce parking charges at the site.

There will also be a update from the NHS on their ‘Healthy Champions’ initiative, which is aimed at people aged 40–74.  The programme is designed to make people aware of possible health risks such as diabetes, kidney disease and strokes, and how to check for these conditions so that can be detected early, and appropriate treatment given before the condition becomes serious.

David Roberts, local Shropshire Councillor for Loton, and Chairman of the LJC, said:

“Haughmond Hill is a major landmark within the LJC area, and is used for walking and recreation by many people.  The presentation from the Forestry Commission will be a chance to find out more about the future of this important piece of countryside, and give the neighbouring parishes a chance to discuss how the new parking charges may affect them.

“I’m also pleased that we will be hearing more about the NHS ‘Healthy Champions’ initiative.  Giving people the opportunity to have checks at an early stage is important to keeping fit and healthy.  Finding out more about these checks and how we can access them locally will be helpful to many people, especially in an area like ours which is sparsely populated and not everyone lives near a doctors surgery.”

There will also be a review of the funding applications that the LJC has received since their last meeting, which include an application from Yockleton Village Hall for a new kitchen; an application for a village enhancement project in Shrawardine; and an upgrade to the car park at Bicton Village Hall.

The public will be warmly welcomed to the meeting and encouraged to join in the discussions.
