Council staff do something funny for Comic Relief

Shropshire Council staff have been showing their support for Comic Relief by carrying out a wide range of weird, wonderful and wacky fundraising activities.

All week, the council’s Shirehall HQ has been wearing a giant red nose to show its support for Red Nose Day.

And here’s what individuals and teams from across the council have been doing to raise money for Comic Relief.

Adrian Andrew, Assistant Branch Secretary with Shropshire UNISON, dressed up as a red dragon and serenaded staff with his version of ‘Puff the magic dragon’ as they arrived at Shirehall this morning – raising £275.93.

Young people at Bridgnorth Youth Centre have been raising money all week for Comic Relief through making donations and sponsoring James Bateman, one of their Youth Workers, to shave his head. This alone raised £100 from the ‘WHO GROUP’ which is part of their short breaks work for young people who experience learning difficulties and disabilities.

On Thursday, the Benefits team in Shrewsbury held a Comic Relief Bake-Off competition and raised more than £130 from selling the cakes.

The Central Area Positive Activities team are holding a Red Nose Day Event on Monday 18 March from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in their normal youth club session at Monkmoor youth centre in Shrewsbury. They are having a onesie night and talent contest to raise money for Comic Relief.

Staff and young people at Sundorne Youth Centre, Shrewsbury held a ‘Onsie’ night at their Youth Club Session on Thursday and were asked to make a small contribution to Comic Relief.

The Child In Need team, Disabled Children’s team and Independent Review Unit (who share an office in the Mount McKinley building on Shrewsbury Business Park) are holding the ‘Great Safeguarding Bake Off and Sale’ on Friday. Members of staff from the three teams are making different cakes and goodies, and these will be judged and then sold to the rest of the building, with all proceeds going to Comic Relief.

The Benefits Team at Stone House in Ludlow are having a cake sale for Red Nose Day on Friday.

The HR transaction team are holding a cake sale at Guildhall in Shrewsbury on Friday.

The Property services team will be selling scrumptious home-made cakes in their office at Guildhall in Shrewsbury on Friday.

The Financial Advice and Corporate Finance team at Shirehall are having a bake-off for Comic Relief, with the final being held on Friday.

Customer Service Centre staff are having a Bake Off at the Customer Service Centre at The Chancery in Shrewsbury on Friday. Once judging is complete and prizes distributed, all cakes will be sold and proceeds given to Comic Relief.

The Gusto team have arranged a four-mile sponsored walk over six of Shrewsbury’s bridges – and Sue Jury, Gusto Co-ordinator, has decided to walk it backwards…

The Column Restaurant at Shirehall will be serving a special red-themed lunch menu on Friday, as well as selling cup cakes at Shirehall, and placing collection buckets in the restaurant.

On Friday the HR / Organisational Development team are holding a book and CD sale, a guess the baby photo competition, and a bake off competition that will be judged by a member of the council’s catering team. The cakes made for the bake off will be sold at the lunchtime book/CD sale.

On Thursday 14 and Friday 15 March the Joint Training/Social Care Training are holding a cakes and cookies sale in the foyer of Bourne House, Shrewsbury, and will also be visiting offices on their Radbrook site to sell cakes. They have also been holding a ‘trash, treasure, trivia sale’ all week.

In addition, staff across the council came into work on Friday wearing something red, in return for a donation to Comic Relief.

The total amount of money raised by council staff will be announced soon.
