Council shows support for Comic Relief

Friday 15 March is Red Nose Day 2013 and Shropshire Council staff will be ‘doing something funny for money’ to help raise cash for Comic Relief.

Amongst the fund-raising activities being carried out by council staff on Red Nose Day are cake bake-offs, cake sales, book sales, sponsored walks and much more, and staff are also being invited to come to work in fancy dress, or wearing something red, in return for a donation.

The Column Restaurant at Shirehall in Shrewsbury will be joining in the fun by serving up a special red themed menu at lunchtime on Friday.  Items on offer include: ruby rosey nosey tomato soup; local beef and rosey nosey tomato lasagne; cherry tomato and mature cheddar quiche, and cherry rosey nosey scones.

And to show the council’s support for Comic Relief – and to encourage staff and passers-by to support this great cause – the council’s Shirehall HQ in Shrewsbury will be wearing a giant red nose all this week.

The nose was originally donated to the council by BBC Shropshire back in 2007, who asked if it could be displayed on a council building to help promote that year’s Red Nose Day.

After that year’s Comic Relief, the BBC allowed the council to keep the nose, and every Red Nose Day since (2009, 2011 and now 2013) it has been dusted off and put back up on the front of Shirehall for a week or so.

So, while the nose hasn’t cost the council a penny, it has helped to raise a lot of money for a really good cause.
