Streets to be closed for resurfacing, and when

Visitors to Shrewsbury town centre are being warned about a series of road closures between 25 February and 10 March 2013, when resurfacing work is carried out as part of Shrewsbury’s Northern Gateway enhancement scheme.

Resurfacing work will be carried out on parts of Smithfield Road, Castle Foregate, Howard Street, and Castle Gates/Meadow Place.

To keep disruption to a minimum, most of the work will take place overnight or on Sundays.

The streets that are to be closed, and when, are as follows:

Smithfield Road westbound (Castle Foregate to Raven Meadows):

  • 7pm on Monday 25 February to 6am on Tuesday 26 February
  • 7pm on Tuesday 26 February to 6am on Wednesday 27 February
  • 7pm on Monday 4 March to 6am on Tuesday 5 March
  • 7pm on Tuesday 5 March to 6am on Wednesday 6 March

Cross Street

  • 9am on Sunday 3 March to 6am on Monday 4 March

Howard Street

  • 9am on Sunday 3 March until 6am on Monday 4 March
  • 9am on Sunday 10 March until 6am on Monday 11 March

Castle Gates, Meadow Place

  • 8pm on Wednesday 6 March to 6am on Thursday 7 March.

There will also be some lane closures during the day and, although delays may occur from time to time, the full road closures have been timed to avoid the busiest times of the week.

Signs will be put in place in advance of each closure and extensive letter drops are to be carried out around the town centre.

Diversion routes will be clearly signed and easy to follow.

In addition, new traffic signals installed on Chester Street (outside the Gateway) and Howard Street will be switched on for the first time on the evening of Wednesday 13 February. Traffic flow will then be carefully monitored so that adjustments can be made if necessary.

This work is being carried out by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd and will be supervised by Shropshire Council’s term consultant, Mouchel.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for transport, said:

“This second phase of the Northern Gateway work is progressing well and these closures will enable the work to be completed by the end of March, as scheduled. This is a challenging site to work on so close to the town centre, but the council and our contractors will continue to work hard to minimise any disruption and maintain access to town for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.”

The Northern Gateway work is being carried out by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd, supervised by Shropshire Council’s term consultant, Mouchel.

Shropshire Council has secured grant funding towards the Scheme from:

  • Growth Point (Department of Communities and Local Government)
  • Local Sustainable Transport Fund (Department for Transport)
  • Connect2 (Big Lottery).
