Buildwas Bridge to reopen early
Buildwas Bridge, which carries the A4169 Buildwas to Much Wenlock road over the River Severn, is scheduled to reopen to traffic at approximately midday on Saturday 23 February 2013.
The bridge was closed on 16 February for up to two weeks to enable essential work to be carried out to replace its expansion joints and resurface the road over it. However, provided that the weather was reasonable when the work was underway, the pre-works expectation was that the road would be reopened sometime during Sunday 24 February 2013.
To try to minimise disruption when the bridge was closed, the work was deliberately programmed to start at the beginning of the school half term holiday week and included weekend working.
The estimated cost of the work, which was designed by Shropshire Council’s term contract consultant, Mouchel, and carried out by Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, is approximately £60,000.
Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for bridge maintenance, said:
‘‘It is appreciated that closing the bridge to carry out this essential work will have caused some inconvenience to the local community, and I am pleased that it will be possible to reopen it earlier than originally envisaged. I’d particularly like to thank Alun Griffiths (Contractors) for this.”
