New surface for shared-use greenway in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury

Shropshire Council is proposing to implement a new shared use footway/cycleway along the route of the existing informal pedestrian route between Galton Drive and Monkmoor Roundabout in Shrewsbury.

The route is already well established for pedestrians and cyclists and provides a link between different parts of Telford Estate and Monkmoor.  It is also particularly well used by local children travelling to and from school.

There has been a longstanding request to surface the path, as the existing path is susceptible to standing water and can get muddy after periods of rain.

External funding for this work has now been secured and work is due to start in early March 2013.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for highways, said:

“The scheme to resurface this path will make a big improvement to the walking and cycling provisions in the local area, especially as this will allow it to be used throughout any wet weather.”

Tony Durnell, local Shropshire Councillor for Monkmoor, added:

“I was really pleased to hear that the new surface for this area between Telford Estate and the Chilterns in Monkmoor is soon to be laid.  It will be much appreciated by all users, as well as making the area that much easier to maintain.  It is also being funded externally, so it is not coming out of Shropshire Council’s budget.   A win-win situation for the residents of Monkmoor.”
