Doorstep sales of chainsaws

Shropshire Council’s public protection team are urging consumers to be on their guard against ‘cold-callers’ selling chainsaws door-to-door.

Several complaints have been received by West Mercia Police about the sale of chainsaws in the Shrewsbury area.

Frances Darling, service manager for safer and stronger communities – public protection and enforcement, said:

“Chainsaws are potentially dangerous items unless used by experienced operators.  We are currently making enquiries into the matter, but in the meantime we are warning potential consumers to stick to trusted suppliers and known outlets when purchasing chainsaws or any other power tools.”

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for public protection, said:

“In the current economic climate, consumers may be tempted to purchase from doorstep sellers, as the prices being charged are likely to appear to be very competitive.  However, whilst consumers may think they are getting a bargain, with items such as power tools there may be safety issues that are not obvious, and if anything does go wrong consumers are likely to experience difficulties in seeking redress.  I would urge consumers to take heed of the advice given by the council’s public protection team when buying from door-to-door sales people.”

Public protection advise consumers to consider the following:

  • Who are you buying from? Do they have paperwork? Are they legitimate?
  • Will you be able to contact the seller in the event of a problem with the product?
  • Think twice before you buy, and if you are made to feel under pressure to make a purchase, have the confidence to say no.
  • Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion.
  • If you spend more than £35 with a trader on the doorstep, you usually have seven days in which to cancel; but remember, you will have to be able to contact the seller to do this.

Anyone who has further information or complaints about the doorstep sales of chainsaws should contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06.  This is the first point of contact for any consumer complaints requiring investigation by the public protection team.
