Discover your local and family history at Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre this weekend
Local residents can find out more about their local history and ancestry at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre this weekend.
Craven Arms and District History group will be holding a three-day local history exhibition at the centre from Friday 18 January 2013 to Sunday 20 January 2013.
The free events start from 10am to 4pm, and everyone young and old are invited to find about the history of Craven Arms and the surrounding area with local experts.
You’ll be able to revisit the area’s past through new material on display covering Craven Arms and local districts, and view old photographs, documents, sale particulars and a Farmore and South Shropshire Farmers display.
Visitors will also be able to relax in the gallery style café at the Discovery Centre. It’s the perfect place to rest those feet after a walk around Onny Meadows, and you will be spoilt for choice with the delicious selection of hot and cold meals, drinks and snacks. The café is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
Craven Arms and District History Group was founded to give family history advice, enable property searches, explore archaeology and other related topics. The area covered by the group includes Craven Arms, Clungunford, Culmington, Diddlebury, Halford, Hopesay, Munslow, Onibury, Sibdon Carwood, Stokesay and Wistanstow.
The group have many resources available including census records (in book form), old parish records (on microfiche), catalogued folders relating to local history for you to browse as well as free Internet access.
The group have monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of each month, at which there are usually guest speakers or guided walks.
A drop-in session, giving family history advice is held every Friday 10am-1pm at our local history centre in the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre.
