Sport Makers: be part of the London 2012 legacy

Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

Shropshire Council is encouraging volunteers to come forward and make sport happen in their local communities, to continue Team GB’s fantastic sporting achievements of summer 2012.

This initiative, named Sport Makers, is part of the official London 2012 legacy programme, and here in Shropshire the council is aiming to recruit over 200 Sport Makers by September 2013.

To register as a Sport Maker, people just need to follow three simple steps:

  • Register on www.sportmakers.co.uk
  • Once registered, people will need to book onto a workshop, which can be done using the website
  • Once they have attended a workshop, people can begin their role as a Sport Maker.

There are several workshops taking place within the next couple of months in Shropshire:

  • Thursday 22 November 2012 – Shirehall, Shrewsbury from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.
  • Wednesday 16 January 2013 – Shirehall, Shrewsbury from 6:30pm until 8:30pm.
  • Tuesday 29 January 2013 – Oswestry Rugby Club, Oswestry from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.

At the free workshop, people will receive an Adidas polo shirt, as well as learning about various opportunities local to them, which could be anything from helping out at their local sports club, marshalling at an event, to organising a kickabout in the park for their friends.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“This is a great opportunity for residents across Shropshire to build on the great summer of sport we had across the country and be a part of the London 2012 legacy locally.  Sport Makers are going to be the driving force of this legacy, so come along and be a part of it.”
