New ‘behind the scenes’ video of museum following successful public tour
A recent public tour of the new Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery at the old music hall proved a great success.
So much so that a video has been produced for others to see the fantastic work going on behind the scenes.
Shropshire Council, together with ISG Construction, the main contractor for the museum project, had organised an open day at the site in October 2012, to give locals and visitors a sneak preview of the developments that have been taken place at the historic building.
Due to the high demand for places on the tour, Shropshire Council have created a video showing the work being done and the plans we have in store for the new museum.
The film is hosted on both the Shropshire Council website and the Shrewsbury Museums website, and can be viewed by clickling here, or going to shropshire.gov.uk or www.shrewsburymuseums.com.
Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for tourism and culture, said:
“More than 200 people came along to the open day and enjoyed the chance to take a behind-the-scenes look at the major restoration work taking place to repair and preserve the buildings, whilst creating a new museum and art gallery for the town, and a tourist information centre.
“We received extremely positive feedback. It was fantastic to hear people’s comments that they found the tour to be a great experience, that they were really impressed by what has been achieved, and were eagerly anticipating the opening of the museum.”
The feedback comments from the tour included:
“Great opportunities to see work in progress. A huge complex project to undertake. It will be a showpiece of skills when complete.”
“This has been the best Saturday morning for a long time. A marvellous tour.”
“Amazing to think of what was covered up previously. Feel very honoured to have seen it.”
The old music hall complex is currently undergoing a major restoration to repair and preserve the buildings. The restoration has had to deal with some huge challenges, because of the complex nature of the building and its history, stretching back to medieval times.
Mike Owen continued:
“The new museum will be a much-welcomed addition to our town’s tourist attractions; it has been an absolute pleasure to show more people the excellent work taking place and share our exciting plans. Now that we’ve made this video, even more people can now see and share in the development of this fantastic project.”
Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery will present some of the most important and interesting artefacts from our collections, alongside contemporary art and temporary touring exhibitions. We want all our visitors to be inspired and then explore and discover more of the heritage of Shrewsbury and Shropshire. Another very special addition to ‘the original one-off Shrewsbury’.
