Golf in Shrewsbury

Shropshire Council is encouraging people to have a go at golf, after the country’s amazing summer of sport.

While the darker evenings mean a change to Meole Brace Golf Course’s opening hours (with the last tee-off time being 3pm), there is still plenty of time to get out in the fresh air and enjoy a game.

The mature parkland course, situated within two miles of Shrewsbury town centre, has 12 holes with greens and fairways varying in length from 124 yards to 400 yards, testing players of all abilities.

For those wishing to take things a bit easier there’s also:

  • ‘Pitch-N-Putt’ for families and youngsters and the less serious golfer
  • golf shop
  • lessons available for everyone
  • bar and cafe.

Shropshire Councillors Steve Charmley and Mike Owen, PGA Golf Pro Nigel Bramhall and junior member Sam Patterson enjoyed a game a fortnight ago.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“The course is great and only a couple of miles from Shrewsbury town centre.  Golf is a great way to keep fit and healthy, and offers a perfect excuse to get outdoors.  Playing a game with junior member Sam also proves that it isn’t just a sport for older people.”

Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for tourism, said:

“Shrewsbury has lots to offer visitors with its independent shops and historic buildings.  A golf course so close is a real bonus, and ideal for a fun family day out.”

Meole Brace Golf Course is open every day from 8.30am until 3pm (last tee-off time) during the winter, with longer opening hours during the summer.
