Enhancing Shrewsbury’s Northern Gateway – an update

Related topics: Community

Work to enhance one of Shrewsbury’s major gateways is going well.

With work to refurbish the railway bridge already complete, the next two weekends will see work being carried out to pave the pavement under Cross Street, make improvements to the pedestrian facilities on the Cross Street and Castle Foregate junction, resurface Cross Street and Chester Street, and replace the pigeon netting under the railway bridges.

For this work to be carried out safely, Cross Street will be closed  this weekend (from 7pm on Saturday 3 through to 6am on Monday 5 November) and again overnight from 7pm on Friday 9 until 7am on Saturday 10 November.

Chester Street will be closed overnight from 7pm on of Saturday 10 until 6am on Monday 12 November. Cross Street will be open.

Traffic will be managed around these closures, with some one way roads being made two way, and diversions will be in place.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said:

“We are working hard to enhance the northern gateway to the town.  Once complete it will offer a vibrant entrance, enabling people to access the town easily and enjoy it.

“Network Rail completed their improvement works to the bridge last Friday (26 October)  and it looks great.

“We’ve worked closely with Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society to ensure that the planned closure does not impact on the West Mid Bonfire and Fireworks Extravaganza, which is to take place this Sunday at the West Mid Showground, and a travel plan is in place.”
