Related topics: Community / Health

A Shropshire Council nursing home has been given the highest rating possible by Government inspectors.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found Four Rivers Nursing Home in Ludlow to be meeting all the essential standards of quality and safety, awarding it the top judgement of compliant in all areas.

During their visit, inspectors heard from residents that they were “very happy” living at Four Rivers.

The report said: “People told us that they were well looked after and relatives spoke highly of the service provided.”  One person told them: “It’s really nice here.  I don’t need much help but when I do need anything they always help me.”

Inspectors praised the team for meeting people’s care and support needs in ways that they preferred.  They noted that “people were supported by a well trained and well supported staff team” and that “everyone said that staff were kind and helpful”.

They applauded how staff were “courteous, supportive and discreet”, and helped “people to make decisions and then support them at their own pace”.

They also said that staff:

  • “were knowledgeable about how to effectively support people”
  • “had access to current information enabling them to provide the support that people needed to enjoy a good quality of life”
  • “had systems in place to monitor care provided”
  • were “working with health care professionals to ensure people’s ongoing good health”
  • promoted people’s independence as far as possible so that “they were able to stay in control of their lives”.

Inspectors added that people’s views were considered and listened to: “People told us that they were involved in making decisions about their care and support and relatives said that they had also been consulted in the care planning process.”

Christine Thomas, manager of the home, said:

“We are really pleased with the report.  The staff here work hard to ensure we are not only compliant, but exceed the requirements of the standards.  We are always aiming to continuously improve as a service and ensure our residents receive a high standard of care that is delivered in a way preferred by individuals.”

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, said:

“We aim to offer a range of quality care services across Shropshire, which promote the strengths and abilities of each individual.  It is wonderful to hear that residents at Four Rivers are very happy with the support they receive and that it is helping them to enjoy a good quality of life.

“I’d like to congratulate the team who should be very proud of this outstanding report; it is a credit to their hard work, professionalism and dedication.”

Rosanna Taylor-Smith, local Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow North, added:

“I am really pleased that Four Rivers has been given such well-deserved praise from the CQC, as residents and their families are pleased with the care they receive.  Praise should go to the staff as well as the Friends of Four Rivers who put on events and raise extra funds for the benefit of all the residents.”

CQC inspections are graded from ‘compliant’ to ‘major concern’.  Receiving a ‘compliant’ rating signifies that a service is consistent and reflective of individuals’ needs, demonstrates the high level of quality care, and represents real dedication from staff.

CQC carried out this inspection as part of their routine schedule of planned reviews. Inspections are designed to assure vulnerable adults, their families and carers, the public, councils and the Government of the quality and standard of the service provided.
