People2People winter ball
A winter ball is taking place to raise funds to support and develop groups led by volunteers for older people, adults with a learning or physical disability, and carers, in the Shrewsbury area.
Social work scheme People2People is holding the event at Shrewsbury Town FC, Greenhous Meadow, Oteley Road, on Saturday 17 November 2012.
Shropshire Council is one of just six councils across England which received funding from the Government to pilot the social work practice. People2People looks at different ways of providing social work support to ensure it best suits people’s needs, and helps them to be more active and independent.
The scheme has been set up by a group of social workers under a not-for-profit community interest company. The board of directors includes people who use the service, staff, non-executive directors and representatives from Shropshire Council.
As part of the pilot, new groups led by volunteers have been created to give older people, adults with a learning or physical disability, and carers, opportunities to share experiences and advice with others in similar situations to themselves. The money raised from the ball will be used to increase the support the groups offer.
The black tie ball features a three-course dinner, two live bands and DJ, promise auction and raffle.
Tickets cost £25. Doors open at 7.30pm. The bar is open until 12.30am, with the evening drawing to a close at 1am.
Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member responsible for personalisation, said:
“The ball will be a fantastic addition to the Shrewsbury events calendar this autumn.
“As well as offering a great night out, the funds raised will help to build on the opportunities being explored by People2People to help people maintain their independence and remain in their communities for longer by giving them more control over their support.
“We would urge people to get on their dancing shoes and come along – and if anyone would be able to donate goods or a service to the auction or raffle we would be really grateful – please get in touch.”
