Discover Shropshire Day on 29 September

Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

We’re now on the final approach to Discover Shropshire Day, a day celebrating all things related to Shropshire’s heritage, to be held at Shirehall in Shrewsbury on Saturday 29 September 2012.

Discover Shropshire Day is an unique gathering together under one roof of lots of different organisations related to Shropshire’s heritage.  Presented as part of Shropshire Council’s Heritage Lottery funded project Volunteering for Shropshire’s Heritage, the occasion promises to be memorable.

Represented is a rainbow coalition of Salopian heritage organisations: everyone from the Shropshire Family History Society, the Friends of Ironbridge Gorge, the Shrewsbury Civic Society to the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, to name but a few.  There’ll be a quiz with prizes and an opportunity for you to place on record what Shropshire means to you.  There will also be bags of opportunities to talk to representatives from the various organisations.  Lots of knowledge will be shared and advice imparted.

Organisations as diverse as the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Telford and Wrekin Libraries, Shropshire Archives and the Friends of Shrewsbury Museum, will all be on hand to provide advice and background information about what they do.  There will be a programme of talks, including a talk from well known archaeologist and author Nigel Baker.

In the afternoon there will be an opportunity to learn about and even participate in mediaeval dance and music, led by dancer Maggie Love and musician Paul Saunders.

We hope as many people as possible will be able to join us for this terrific opportunity to explore a wide range of Shropshire’s history and heritage.

Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for tourism and culture, said:

“Discover Shropshire Day is going to be a wonderful opportunity for all of us with an interest in Shropshire’s heritage to celebrate this fascinating and beautiful county.  This really is a rare and precious gathering of heritage organisations all happy to share knowledge and dispense advice.

“We all of us need a sense of place, and on Discover Shropshire Day we’ll have a marvellous opportunity to celebrate this beautiful, diverse, richly historic county of ours.  I very much hope that lots of people with an interest in Shropshire’s heritage will be able to come along and share their sense of place with each other.”

Discover Shropshire Day runs at Shirehall in Shrewsbury on Saturday 29 September 2012 from 10.30am to 4pm.  There’s no need to book: just turn up.  We look forward to meeting you there.  Anyone wanting a copy of the full programme please see www.shropshirearchives.org.uk; and for further information contact John Benson on 01743 255377 or email john.benson@shropshire.gov.uk.
