Council teams up with Waste Watch to celebrate waste less, live more week

Related topics: Community

Shropshire Council has teamed up with Waste Watch to support the organisation’s first waste less, live more campaign next week (Monday 17 September to Sunday 23 September).

The week marks the start of the national campaign which aims to raise awareness of how environmental and social issues are interlinked.  The campaign encourages people to rethink how they live their lives in ways that reduces our environmental impact, whilst improving our health and well-being.

The campaign focuses on several messages, which include:

  • What’s good for the environment is good for us
  • We can all live better whilst consuming less
  • Social, environmental and economic issues are intrinsically linked and must be addressed as such

Between 17- 23 September there will be a whole host of activities and events put on by a diverse range of organisations, businesses and charities across the UK encouraging people to perform a simple act big or small – that supports both people and the environment.  The aim is to demonstrate how we can all live better whilst consuming less.

As part of the campaign the council’s sustainability team are encouraging local residents, business and voluntary and community organisations to consider ways to support the campaign.

Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for carbon reduction and sustainability, said:

“I am delighted that we are supporting the waste less, live more campaign.  It is the little actions we do in our everyday lives, which we may not realise, that can have a negative effect on our environment.  We know that change is necessary, but understand that it can only happen when we work together.  This is why it’s important to raise awareness of how as a community as a whole, we could help create a healthier and happier environment.”

The waste less live more campaign is calling on the Government and other decision-makers to put social and environmental well-being at the centre of policy-making and funding for services through three policy calls:

  • An English curriculum reflecting sustainability and well-being
  • A healthy environment is vital to our own well-being
  • The Energy Bill Revolution
