Step out and experience Shropshire’s rich heritage this summer
Residents and visitors can get to experience Shropshire’s rich heritage this July and August by joining a series of guided walks organised by Friends of Shropshire Archives.
People will get the opportunity to find out more about the outstanding history and heritage of Shropshire ranging from the mines, quarries and canal at Lilleshall, to the Llanymynech Lime works.
The walks programme includes:
- A walk led by local historian David Adams around the industrial heritage of Lilleshall on Thursday 12 July 2012 at 7pm.
- A tour of the newly-refurbished Much Wenlock Museum, with its very topical Olympic connections, on Wednesday 18 July 2012 at 7.30pm. This will be followed by a stroll around this fascinating town with a knowledgeable guide from Friends of Much Wenlock Museum.
- A tour of the Llanymynech Heritage area on Wednesday 25 July 2012 at 7pm. This will include a visit to the amazing Hoffman kiln – one of only three such surviving lime kilns in the UK.
The final walk is a tour of Little Wenlock on Wednesday 15 August 2012 at 7pm, and offers an interesting contrast between the countryside and industrial survivals.
Friends of Shropshire Archives arrange a varied programme of events across the county to support the work of Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives. They also support the service through volunteer help and fundraising.
Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism and culture, said:
“Friends of Shropshire Archives provide a vital role in supporting our county’s heritage and culture. What better way to spend a summers evening and enjoy our fantastic heritage. I hope many people will come along and join their guided walks and find out more about our county’s fascinating history.”
All walks cost £4 per person, payable on the day. For further details please go to www.friendsofshropshirearchives.org.uk, or telephone 01743 255350.
