School meals service celebrates £700,000 contract success
Shropshire Council’s school meals team is celebrating after winning new contracts to provide a catering service to 10 schools in Walsall and Worcestershire.
The ten contracts will generate a total of £700,000 for the council.
The team currently provides meals to 144 primary schools and 16 secondary schools in Shropshire, and also provides catering services to sixth form colleges, independent schools and schools in North Wales, Telford, Hereford and Worcester. In Worcestershire, which has no dedicated school meals service, they also provide meals to 52 first, middle and secondary schools.
They have now been awarded contracts to provide a school meals service from September 2012 to a further six primary schools in Walsall and Willenhall, and four schools in Worcester, including a large secondary school (see below). They have also retained the contract for John Masefield High School in Ledbury, which recently went out to tender.
Shropshire Council’s schools meals service aims to provide good quality, nutritious food for children. The service currently employs more than 1,500 people and serves around 17,000 meals per day in Shropshire, and a further 8,000 per day in Worcestershire.
Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for the school meals service, said:
