Oswestry Bike Fest – Sunday 8 July 2012

Sunday 8 July 2012 will see the first ever Oswestry Bike Fest as part of the week-long Oswestry Games.

Bike Fest is a family cycling festival open to all ages and any level of cycling experience. The emphasis is on enjoying cycling and trying new skills – whether people cycle regularly or have not been on a bike for many years.

The event will run from 11am until 3pm at the Walford and North Shropshire College site in the town.  At 10.30am a family cycle ride will leave from the Meadows School and cycle to the college on quiet streets and cycle tracks. The college site will be closed to vehicles, and for those arriving by car parking is available in the leisure centre car park.

Activities on offer will include mini-BMX, “scootability”, stabilisers-off sessions, a free bike safety check by Dr Bike, “bling your bike”, make a pedal-powered smoothie and people can also learn all about local cycle routes and events. All activities are free.

Two special attractions will be a display of vintage “bicycles that won the war” with live music of the 1930s and 40s; and a wide selection of adapted bikes for people with disabilities, provided by Quest88.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for healthy and active lifestyles, said:

“Oswestry Bike Fest will be a great day out and a chance for more people to find out about the latest cycling initiatives in Oswestry. We can offer free cycle training for adults, a Sustrans Bike It officer working in schools, and the detailed Oswestry Walking and Cycling map. We’re very pleased to be part of the Oswestry Games and looking forward to all the events that week.”
