Families and those who fancy a taste of the country are invited to a great day out at Greenacres Farm in Walford Heath on Sunday 29 July 2012.

Visitors can come and meet the resident sheep, pigs and chickens and get involved in a host of activities at the farm open day, from 10am to 3pm.

Greenacres Farm is a 16 acre smallholding run by Shropshire Council and provides employment and work experience for adults with learning disabilities.

As well as meeting the animals, children can enjoy a range of fun farm activities including welly wanging, splat the rat, jam jar ping pong and Greenacres Treasure Hunt.

Visitors can enter a raffle with prizes including gift sets, chocolate, wine, food and gardening hampers and plants. They also have the opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery and local wildlife on the Greenacres Farm country walk.

The farm shop will be selling free range eggs, vegetables, jams, pickles and chutneys, all made from produce grown on the farm. Perennial garden plants, tubs and baskets, stepping stones and garden ornaments will be on sale. Light refreshments including home reared pork baps, sandwiches and homemade cakes will also be available.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for disabilities, said:

“As a council we are committed to providing adults with learning disabilities with the skills and confidence to work in their local communities. This is a great opportunity for families and friends to come along, meet the staff, have fun, and purchase some of the fantastic produce and products made at Greenacres. The open day has been extremely popular in previous years and I know our dedicated team at the farm will offer a warm welcome to all our visitors.”

Aggie Caesar-Homden, Shropshire councillor for Ruyton and Baschurch, said:

“The open day at Greenacres Farm this month is sure to be a great event – I hope that people will take the opportunity to visit and see the fantastic work that they do. As a local councillor, I am very proud of the achievements of Greenacres Farm, both with regards to increasing employment opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and the brilliant contribution the farm makes to the local community and economy.”
