Condover Bridge to close for essential repairs

Condover Bridge, which carries the Condover to Dorrington road over the Cound Brook near the Vicarage in Condover, will close to traffic on Monday 20 August 2012 for up to four weeks to enable essential repairs to be carried out to it. 

The proposed work will involve taking down and rebuilding the bridge’s western edge, which is leaning heavily. 

Unfortunately, because of the narrow nature of the bridge, it will be necessary to close it to traffic to carry out most of the work safely.  It is therefore proposed to close it to traffic from 20 August 2012 for up to four weeks.  After that, the work will continue for approximately another week, with the bridge open under traffic light control. 

When the bridge is closed, traffic will be diverted via the A49 and Station Road, Dorrington. 

Access over the bridge for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout the proposed work. 

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for bridge maintenance, said:

“This is essential work which needs to be carried out to enable the bridge to remain open in the long term. 

“Whilst it is appreciated that the bridge closure will cause some disruption and inconvenience, please be assured that everyone involved will do all that they reasonably can to reopen it as soon as possible.” 

Tim Barker, Shropshire Councillor for Burnell, said:

“This closure is unfortunate but necessary, and has been scheduled for the school holiday period to try and minimise the inevitable disruption to normal life.  Bus users will be affected in Ryton, and separate arrangements will be put in place to mitigate the service loss to those residents.  The bus will continue to run through Condover, but accessing the village directly off the A49.”
