Apprenticeship events in south Shropshire
South Shropshire residents and businesses are encouraged to attend apprenticeship events taking place in Ludlow on Wednesday 18 July 2012.
County Training, part of Shropshire Council, in partnership with Shropshire Housing Group (SHG) and Jobcentre Plus, has developed a programme of information, advice and networking events for 16- to 24-year-olds and businesses looking to find out more about apprenticeships and their benefits.
A total of three separate events will run throughout the day at the Ludlow Brewery. The first event, starting at 1.30pm, will be for 16- to 24-year-old Jobcentre Plus customers who are interested in accessing employment through apprenticeships. They will also have the opportunity to find out about other employment support services available in Ludlow.
This will be followed at 4.30pm with an apprenticeship advice session for young people (regardless of academic abilities) who have left school or college this year, as well as all 16- to 24-year-olds looking for work and training. Parents and carers are welcome to attend the event to find out about the range of apprenticeships, work and training opportunities available for their sons and daughters. Local training providers, to include Ludlow College, and Walford and North Shropshire College, will also be present, along with ‘Shropshire Youth’ providing advice on apprenticeship programmes not available with County Training.
The day will be brought to a close with an event for local businesses, commencing at 6pm with a light buffet. Attendees will have the opportunity to find out about and discuss:
- how to improve business performance by employing highly committed young people as apprentices
- the increasing availability and quality of apprenticeships
- Government grants for apprenticeship training including the new grant scheme.
Councillor Karen Burgoyne, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member responsible for preparation for work, said:
“Shropshire is full of talented, committed and energetic young people who just want a chance to show what they can do but, unfortunately, there aren’t nearly enough employers willing to give them that first opportunity. Apprentices will play a huge role in the future economy of the area, and it’s vital our workforce has the knowledge, skills and experience which an apprenticeship can bring.”
Through the events, County Training and SHG hope to raise awareness of the apprenticeship programme in south Shropshire, whilst generating new opportunities for young people to access employment and start successful careers.
County Training currently provides training for apprentices in a wide range of vocational areas including business administration, hairdressing, childcare, teaching assistants, catering, customer services, health & social care, IT, and warehousing and storage. They will also be able to signpost to other providers and colleges offering apprenticeships to suit the needs of particular employment sectors such as construction, plumbing, engineering and agriculture.
